Glossary of Tree Service Terms


An Arborist is a tree professional who practices the cultivation, management, and study of individual trees, shrubs, vines, and other woody plants.  

Crane Service:

Crane Service is the use of cranes to remove large, severely damaged, hazardous, or unstable trees.  

Crown Cleaning:

Crown Cleaning is the removal of dead, dying, diseased, deformed, and damaged branches from trees.  

Crown Raising:

Crown Raising is the removal of lower branches from a tree to increase visibility, reduce hazards near sidewalks, and provide clearance.  

Crown Reduction:

Crown Reduction is the process of shortening long limbs and cutting the tips of branches on a tree that has grown too large for its permitted space.  

Crown Thinning:

Crown Thinning is the removal of unnecessary branches and live growth in a tree to admit more natural light, reduce weight, and decrease wind resistance.  


Deadwood is branches or parts of trees that are dead.  


Dieback is when a tree begins to die from the tip of its leaves or roots back to the base because of disease.  

Emergency Storm Work:

Emergency Storm Work is the removal of damaging trees or large limbs that have fallen due to severe weather.  

Hazard Reduction Pruning:

Hazard Reduction Pruning is the removal of visibly hazardous branches and limbs in a tree.  

Stump Grinding:

Stump Grinding is the most efficient and effective method for the removal of tree stumps on a property.  

Tree Pruning:

Tree Pruning is the selective removal of parts of a tree, such as branches, limbs, or roots.  

 Tree Removal:

Tree Removal is the actual removal of a tree by digging up or cutting down.  

Tree Trimming:

Tree Trimming is the maintenance of a tree by cutting back branches to keep them healthy and prevent them from causing damage.  

Vista Pruning:

Vista Pruning is the selective pruning of branches and limbs to allow a specific view, usually by creating view windows through the tree’s crown.  

Young Tree Pruning:

Young Tree Pruning is the process of trimming the branches and limbs of a young tree to ensure that it develops a strong structure and desirable form.
